Hello! Welcome to BBC Xtra English Today Doug joins Louay to talk about a warning from the United Nations and Aid agencies. As the world’s eyes turn towards the conflict in Libya and on the disaster in Japan, United Nations aid agencies have warned that Ivory Coast is rapidly becoming a forgotten humanitarian catastrophe. Since last November, Ivory Coast has seen growing violence between forces loyal to the former president and supporters of his rival. Although almost half a million people have fled the violence in the country, there has been very little response to the UN’s appeal for funds. The UN agencies in Ivory Coast are already struggling with security issues as well as problems with funding – an appeal for 32 million dollars has only received 7 million dollars so far. This was for the World Food Programme. The United Nations has been calling on its donors to distribute funds to many other countries in crisis, but it still needs funding for the operation in Ivory Coast. This is an extremely trying time for everyone, and if the UN doesn’t get funding now, it will not be possible to provide food for the people in Cote D’Ivoire and Liberia who will need it 3 or 4 months down the road. Last week, at least 25 people were died at a market in the capital city of Abidjan when it was shelled. The UN says this may be a war crime and and aid workers report that the city is emptying, as desperate inhabitants flee the city. Aid agencies find it totally unacceptable that they have almost nothing to give to these people.
