Today we talk about a crucial link between cattle and Sudan’s independence process.

Now that the official results of the referendum on independence have been announced, politicians and people from the North and South are carefully considering the changes that lie ahead.

While politicians may be considering things like oil and citizenship, ordinary people in Southern Sudan are worried about the welfare of their cattle.

In a report from the southern state of Bahr al-Ghazal, the BBC’s Martin Plaut says that cattle is a measure of wealth for the people there.

He met with cow herders who told him that they would share their grasslands with a northern tribe.

Sharing the grasslands became a tradition over many years but because of the conflict, these herders now want the border to be closed off to northerners.

William Klong, a local community activist believes that the cattle are crucial to any peace between the north and the south.

He told Martin Plaut that the movement of cattle from the north is very important and it would be dangerous if the border was closed to them.

In his opinion if tribes feel they do not have access to grazing grounds for their cows, a war can start very easily.

With a number of things still being discussed between the north and south, many hope that the issue of cattle will be resolved by politicians soon.

This is very important issue because every every confilct point can be solve by politicians except border conflict between the civilian
