Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English! One of the world’s most unusual heart patients has given hope to people suffering from heart disease. Troy Golden is a pastor from Oklahoma in the USA. He was born with a serious genetic heart condition called Marfan’s syndrome It became so severe that he couldn’t come out of bed or breath properly. He was placed on a heart transplant waiting list in January 2010. However he ran out of time and could not wait any more for a donor. He was in such a bad condition, a normal heart pump wouldn’t work for him. To save him, his cardiologist, Dr Doug Hortsmanshof came up with an unusual plan. He took out his heart and replaced it with an artificial heart. Troy is now one of the very few people in America who have had one of these artificial hearts fitted and is now living at home with his family! Even though the new device is rather loud, Troy is used to it. He told the BBC that he doesn’t really notice it any more and that the sound comforts his wife because it means that he is alive. However it is not very convenient as Troy has to carry a lot of things with him like valves and batteries that help the artificial heart push blood around his body. These are all carried in a rucksack which he carried on his back. This story is one example of how advanced medical technology has become. What do you think of transplant therapy?
