Elderly and vulnerable people are particularly at risk from being targeted
Police in central Scotland have warned householders against thieves who try and gain access to homes using distraction techniques.
It follows three thefts in the Falkirk area where items and cash were taken after a thief conned his way inside.
A Central Scotland Police spokesman said thieves used techniques such as asking for a drink of water.
He warned that elderly and vulnerable people were particularly at risk of being targeted.
The spokesman said: "Criminals will target those who they think are the most vulnerable in order to steal.
"No matter how plausible the person may appear, the message is simple - treat strangers with caution. If you are still unsure contact the police immediately."
