Large crowds gathered in Durham for the 126th annual Durham Miners' Gala.

About 50 former colliery lodge banners were carried in the traditional parade through Durham city centre, marking the area's mining heritage.

The main speaker at Saturday's event was former London Mayor Ken Livingston, who described his invitation as "an honour".

Among those taking part were thousands of public sector workers angry at planned government cuts.

The so-called "big meeting" is held on the city's old racecourse.
