US rapper Lil Wayne has been placed in solitary confinement in a New York jail, after wardens found he had broken prison rules.

The star was found stashing a charger and headphones for a digital music player in his cell earlier this year.

The Grammy-award-winner will remain segregated until his November release date, a spokesman has said.

Lil Wayne, who was jailed for gun possession, will now be confined to his new cell for 23 hours a day.

He is no longer permitted to socialise with other inmates, television has been banned and he is only allowed one telephone call a week now.

The 28-year-old was jailed in March after pleading guilty to gun possession.

The charges were linked to his arrest in 2007 when a gun was found on his tour bus.

Officials said the headphones and charger were found in May, hidden in a crisp bag in his cell's bin.

His latest album, I Am Not a Human Being is due to be released this month.
