Emeli Sande had to take 'time out' after her divorce

Emeli Sande has divorced her husband after a year of marriage.

The singer managed to keep the split private after divorcing marine biologist Adam Gouraguine in the summer of 2013.

Emeli has been out of the public eye for a while, working on her next album in America, but on Monday evening she Tweeted:

"It's been a difficult year for me but my beautiful family, incredible friends and all of you have helped me through."

Newsbeat's Sinead Garvan caught up with the singer at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday before the split was announced where she told us:

"I just needed to live a normal life for a little bit, with my family, with my loved ones, just get back to my real passionate love for music."
