Stretch out, bare a wrist and slap it on. Snap bracelets remind us of our childhood and now some of us are now buying them for our own children.

Yet in the run up to Christmas, parents are being warned over "dangerous" bands made from old tape measures.

Mechelle Lovett from Australia shared a picture of her friend's child on Facebook after her face was cut by the metal inside the bracelet. The picture was shared dozens of times.

Julie Brooks from Nottingham, saw it.

She had just bought two packs of Frozen bracelets and became worried. Opening up the bracelet, she saw the plastic over the strip of metal could wear down or rip, making it easy for children to hurt themselves.

Julie Brooks was so worried she contacted the Nottinghamshire County Council's Trading Standards team.

She told them: "I bought these online for birthday party packs and then saw on Facebook a horror story where a cheap snap bracelet cut a child's face.

"I was horrified when they arrived as they looked so poorly made, so I decided to cut one open and found a cut up metal tape measure inside so it was clearly not designed to be used as a toy.

"I got a refund but I just want to warn other parents to steer clear of these dangerous items before there's an accident."

Slap or snap bracelets came into fashion in the US in the 1990s. Not all snap bracelets are made with metal though, some use plastic. Yet as they became more popular a number of schools decided to ban them over the risk of injury. The New York Times reported that officials at a school in the city said a pupil who took off the cloth covering needed three stitches in her hand after being cut.

At the height of the snap bracelet craze US pharmacy chain Walgreen ordered all its shops to remove "slap bracelets" from shelves while they were investigated. It was reported that these bracelets were not based on the original design, but were imitations produced abroad.
