Bono has suggested to US politicians that they use comedy to tackle so-called Islamic State.

The U2 singer was speaking in front of a US Senate subcommittee on Tuesday as part of a discussion about violent extremism.

He said sending in comedians such as Amy Schumer and Chris Rock could be an alternative to military action.

"Don't laugh, but I think comedy should be deployed," he said.

He compared IS to the Nazis who famously marched in what was called a "goose step".

"It's like you speak violence you speak their language, but [if] you laugh at them when they're goose stepping down the street, then it takes away their power.

"So I'm suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Sasha Baron Cohen. I'm actually serious."

Could this man help defeat so-called Islamic State?

Bono was joined by a number of diplomats looking to push the US government to do more to help refugees who are trying to escape violence in the Middle East.

He explained the concept of using comedy to tackle extremists isn't new.

"If you look at national socialism and Daesh and Isil, this is the same thing we've seen this before.

"They're very vain they've got all the signs up, it's show business. The first people that Adolf Hitler threw out of Germany were the doubters and the surrealists."

Senator Jeanne Shaheen who was at the committee said Bono's wasn't a completely crazy suggestion.

"Actually, that's not the first time I've heard experts on how do we counter violent extremism talk about that," she said.

"It's one of the things that we're looking at."

Amy Schumer seemed surprised by Bono's grand plan, simply tweeting "Holy ****!" alongside a link to the story.
