England flanker James Haskell has called on social media platforms to do more to tackle the problem of fake news.

The 31-year-old recently had to deny stories claiming he'd died after taking a steroid overdose.

"I'm hugely worried, people are just making stuff up," the Wasps star told Newsbeat.

"I just think those platforms should put a bit of time in to eradicating that stuff."

Over the weekend Haskell told fans in a YouTube video that he wasn't dead. , external

He dismissed the latest rumours as "click bait" designed to sell "dodgy supplements" aimed at helping build muscles.

"A guy who I helped train messaged me on Twitter asking me if I'd seen this website.

"He then sent me a link and it claimed that I was under investigation for some huge scandal, where my whole career was going up in smoke.

"Then, as you scrolled down, it was trying to sell you some kind of supplement."

But the England international thinks the problem of fake news is much bigger.

"You see it all the time. No-one checks anything.

"The world is disappearing down the toilet via social media every day.

"Everyone's got an attention span of about a minute now and that's it."

He's called on the likes of Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram to invest more resources into dealing with the problem.

"They could do it overnight, but they just don't want to do it.

"I think the sad thing is, it's like it's opened Pandora's box.

"Social media could be so good. It could provide information, give you enlightenment, spread positive news.

"But instead it seems a lot of the time it's a load of nutters making up rubbish, or eating chilli peppers and wondering why they're crying and can't breathe."

Facebook says the vast majority of articles people see on their newsfeeds are authentic.
