Fire crews to assess American car carrier blaze

A transporter ship which caught fire is currently off the coast of the Isle of Wight.

The ship, the Courage, is an American car carrier. Unconfirmed reports suggest that as many as 100 cars may have caught fire in one of the lower decks.

The fire, which is now under control, started last night when the ship was 40 miles from Harwich, in Essex.

Hampshire firefighters are being winched aboard to assess the situation.
