Virtual burglary: Consumers being conned using fake emails

More than 5,000 people were conned into sending planned payments to different bank accounts last year.

A well-timed email meant victims sent money to criminals rather than the companies they intended to pay.

The figure is up 71% on the previous year, with UK losses of £126m, according to police figures compiled for Radio 4's consumer programme, You & Yours.
