The Duchess of Cambridge began her day at an event for the Anna Freud Centre, a children's mental health charity.

A patron of the charity, she was there to thank donors backing its plan for a new £34m 'centre of excellence' in Kings Cross, London.

Later, she opened the new Magic Garden at Hampton Court Palace, a play area that includes a 'Dragon's nest'.

The garden draws inspiration from the myths and legends of Hampton Court and was designed by award-winning landscape gardener Robert Myers.

"She could immediately see just how wonderful it was and said she is looking forward to bringing her own children," said chairman of Historic Royal Palaces Rupert Gavin.

Kate revealed to children playing in the garden that a hamster called Marvin has joined the royal household. "She said she has a hamster and Charlotte really likes it because the whiskers always tickle her face," one of the children said.

The Duchess was said by court team member Barbara Smith to be "desperate to take her shoes off and run around" as she toured the new attraction in the sunshine.

Later, she visited the National Portrait Gallery's 'Vogue 100: A Century of Style' exhibition - where snaps of her, as featured in and on the cover of the latest issue of Vogue, are on display.
