Luton Borough Council has spent £220,000 updating CCTV cameras to enforce bus lane regulations in the town.

From Monday 4 April, drivers who use the bus lane illegally will be issued with a £60 Penalty Charge Notice.

Officers will view the footage and judge if a driver has contravened the regulations.

Luton's bus lanes are for use by buses, bicycles and Hackney carriages only.

In 2005 regulatory powers were introduced under the Transport Act 2000 which made it possible for councils to enforce bus lanes using cameras.

Councillor Dave Taylor, responsible for transportation and road safety, said: "Bus services are a fundamental part of Luton's transport system and need to be protected if they are to operate efficiently, reliably and on time.

"Unfortunately some motorists choose to ignore road signs and continue to drive through bus lanes."

New warning signs will be erected advising motorists that camera enforcement is in operation at all locations.
