Wokingham's Boots store is one of the town's buildings which will be upgraded
Planning permission has been granted for the first phase of a multi-million pound regeneration of Wokingham town centre.
The refurbishment of Peach Place will see derelict offices replaced with new flats and the town hall upgraded.
Buildings on Broad Street and Rose Street will also be reclad and refurbished to give a new home to stores including Boots and Clarks.
Work is expected to begin next spring and continue throughout 2013.
Councillor Alistair Corrie from Wokingham Borough Council is excited to see the plans move a step closer.
He said: "The town has been waiting for regeneration to happen for years.
"People are going to start to see real changes in the town centre during the next few years, starting with improvements to some of the most unsightly buildings in the entire town."
Plans for the town's wider regeneration, including new shops and a hotel in the Elms Field area, are expected to be submitted in the next few months.
