Work on the £6m project is expected to start later this year
A £6m transformation to create a Berkshire school "for the 21st Century" has been approved.
Bulmershe School in Woodley, Wokingham, will boast refurbished classrooms, a post-16 learning centre, remodelled library and improved dining facilities.
The mixed sex school and sixth form was built almost 50 years ago and caters for more than 1,000 pupils aged 11-19.
The project is being funded and managed by Wokingham Borough Council which granted planning permission this week.
A tendering process will be held to choose a contractor with work set to start on a phased basis later this year.
'Drive and determination'
Some work, such as new classroom doors, has already started as it did not require planning permission.
Councillor Rob Stanton, deputy leader of Wokingham council, said: "We're proud to help it on its journey to create a school for the 21st Century.
"We agreed to fund this major building project because we were impressed with the school's drive and determination."
Head teacher Emma Reynolds said: "Expectation and ambition stretch everything we do; this new build will mirror our high standards and aspirations."
