A developer has agreed to pay £600,000 towards repairing a park which appeared to sink after a shopping centre was built nearby.

Costain Limited, which built the Parkway shopping centre, has not admitted liability for the damage to Victoria Park.

However, it reached the settlement after a long-running row with Newbury Town Council.

Council leader Dave Goff said the site would be "restored to its full glory".

Former leader Julian Swift-Hook said: "Victoria Park is the jewel in Newbury's crown and I am delighted that this long-running dispute has been brought to a satisfactory conclusion."

Bowlers at the park claimed the green had sunk by 30cm (14ins) in the two years since the 300,000 sqft (91.4 sqm) shopping centre was built.

The bowling green, tennis courts, football pitches and paths around the park were affected, the council said.

The council said fixing the green would cost up to £85,000, while restoring the park and football pitches could run into six figures.
