Rubbish is still uncollected on some streets

Unions who represent bin collectors are meeting with Birmingham City Council representatives to try to resolve a dispute ahead of further action.

Some city roads have not been cleared of rubbish for four weeks.

Council refuse collectors voted last week to only work half their eight-hour shifts this Thursday and Friday.

Unions said a pay review meant some refuse workers would lose £4,000 a year. The council said it had to make changes to meet equality laws.

About 480 council staff are involved in the dispute over pay which has arisen from the legal duty of councils across the country to ensure equality in men and women's pay rates.

Adverse weather and the Christmas holidays had also caused delays to bin collections. The council brought in teams of casual workers to help clear the backlog.
