The swimmer was struggling in 4ft (1.2m) high waves off Newquay, the coastguard said
A swimmer from Plymouth has been rescued after getting into difficulty in the sea off Cornwall.
A passerby spotted the man waving for help off Towan beach, Newquay, at midday and alerted emergency services.
Lifeguards went out to assist the swimmer who was struggling in 4ft (1.2m) high waves about a third of a mile (500m) off the coast.
The man, in his mid-20s, was brought to shore but did not need medical assistance, Falmouth Coastguards said.
A spokesman for coastguards added: "It was fortunate that a member of the public spotted the swimmer and quickly phoned it in as otherwise it could have been a different story."
