Up to 20 families are in emergency accommodation after a fire ripped through a block of flats.

The blaze devastated flats in Plymouth where eight fire crews were called to the scene.

Firefighters remained at the site through the night to control the fire in Clowance Street in the Devonport area of the city.

More than 100 people were moved from the buildings but nobody is understood to have been injured.

Resident Chantelle Shaw was in her front room when her young daughter alerted her to the fire.

She said: "Before I knew it there was a huge explosion and the window came out."

Will Watts, manager of the Mount Wise Neighbourhood Centre, said the community had rallied round to help.

He said: "Just people offering to get clothes, nappies for the children, water, tea, coffee, blankets - anything people can do - I heard people offering accommodation to people who have been affected by the fire, it really has brought everyone together."

Plymouth City Council said a rest centre was set up overnight at Devonport Guildhall and emergency welfare fund officers were at the scene for anyone who needed financial assistance.

"It's too early to say when residents will be allowed back to their homes, so we are now working with our colleagues at Plymouth Community Homes to find accommodation for everyone as quickly as we possibly can," a spokesperson said.

The council confirmed 95 people, including 58 children had been directly affected and those that needed "emergency accommodation have been housed in hotels and B&Bs temporarily".

The council thanked the local community for its "overwhelming" generosity.

"Devonport Guildhall is overflowing with bags of clothing, bedding and toys and we are not able to take anymore donations as we simply do not have room to store them."
