A cow has been shot by police in Cumbria after it strayed on to the A66 near Penrith and injured a man.

Officers took the decision to destroy the animal after a man who approached it suffered minor injuries when he was knocked over.

A stretch of the eastbound carriageway of the road at Kemplay Roundabout was blocked for a time, causing travel disruption, a force spokeswoman said.

No-one else was injured in the incident.
