Walton-on-the-Naze's beach patrol team sent out a sea scooter for the rescue

Two men have been rescued by a beach patrol after their kayak capsized about three-quarters of a mile out to sea.

The men, aged 67 and 72, had been fishing near Walton-on-the-Naze pier in Essex on Tuesday morning.

Tendring District Council said its beach team was scrambled, the boat was righted, they were able to get back in and were towed ashore.

Once they warmed up, they did not require medical treatment.

The council said the kayak had drifted about 400m (360 yards) out from the end of Walton Pier

The men, who were from neighbouring Frinton and Holland-on-Sea, had been fishing in choppy waters when their kayak overturned and they lost their oars, the council said.

It was reported to the beach team at about 11:30 BST.

Luke Hood, of the patrol team, said: "They started off about 200m (180 yards) offshore, which is where you would expect them to remain, but quickly drifted about one mile towards the Naze.

"They got into difficulties in an area where the water can get a bit rough.

"They were quite shaken by their experience and were very grateful for being rescued."
