Baggage scanning staff at Stansted Airport in Essex have been on strike in a row over pay.

Members of the GMB union, who work for private contractor Mitie, want a 3% pay rise instead of the 1.5% increase offered by the firm.

About 10 workers who check hand baggage took part in the action between 03:45 BST and 12:45 BST.

The airport and Mitie said "robust contingency plans" had been put in place to avoid passenger disruption.

Gary Pearce, of the GMB, said: "The company has made a 13.5% increase in profit... and our members want 3%, which amounts to about 10p an hour.

"They are responsible for making sure there is nothing untoward in the bags that travel on aircraft."

A spokeswoman for Mitie said the company was "committed to treating our employees fairly with regards to pay and terms and conditions and will continue to do so".

More industrial action is planned for Bank Holiday Monday, but the union has said it hopes to meet Mitie this week for talks.
