The council says the grit is for use on public roads and pavements and not for use on private property

People in Gloucestershire are being urged to report anyone they spot stealing grit and salt from roadside bins to the police.

Gloucestershire Highways which supplies the grit has had reports of people helping themselves for use on drives.

A spokesman said the grit was provided in roadside bins to be used on public pavements and roads.

"Anyone caught using it on their own property could face prosecution," the spokesman said.

'Selfish individuals'

"While we have enough grit in Gloucestershire, the salt and resources we have has to be focused on keeping roads open.

"As home and business owners, people can help themselves by clearing the footpath in front of their property.

"I was disappointed to hear that a few selfish individuals are taking grit that is provided to keep road users and pedestrians safe.

"If you spot someone taking grit for their own private use, please call the police on 0845 090 1234," he added.
