Pictures of the dead bodies of teenagers killed in a road crash are being shown to Isle of Wight school pupils as part of a safety campaign.

George Hamon, 17 and Guy Knight, 16, died when a car driven by a friend collided with another vehicle in 2008.

Their families agreed for the graphic crash scene pictures to be shown.

George's father, John Hamon, said: "Young adults need to start to think before they get into a car - and of the consequences."

Shock tactics

The DVD is part of a campaign to reduce deaths among young, inexperienced drivers. It was officially launched at Sandown High School, where the boys used to be pupils.

The film also includes the testimony of the parents of one of the three survivors of the collision near Ryde.

The DVD is to be shown in all the island's high schools. George's father John said he hoped there would be a positive reaction among pupils.

He said: "I think there will be, once they've seen the DVD and seen people's reactions.

"It is graphic but nothing is going to bring George back".

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue defended the use of such graphic images of the aftermath of a serious accident.

Trevor Moyce said: "Unlike their computer games, you can die in a road traffic accident and seeing images like this is a true realisation of exactly what can happen."

Those pupils who saw the first screening found it emotional and sobering.

"It makes you really think what these families had to go through and it could happen to you or your family," said one.

"I've never seen anything like that before and it's really changed my opinion of driving," added another.
