Body in Southampton's Itchen River may be missing man

A body discovered in a river in Southampton is thought to be that of a missing man.

Police said the body had yet to be formally identified but the family of 51-year-old Barrie Thompson had been informed of the death.

The dead man was spotted in the River Itchen, near Woodmill Activity Centre in the north of the city, by a member of the public on Sunday morning.

Mr Thompson went missing from his Southampton home on 14 May.

His car was later discovered at Woodmill.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Until the body has been formally identified we cannot speculate, however the next of kin of Barrie Thompson have been notified by police that a body has been found."
