Dozens of residents have been evacuated from their homes on the Isle of Wight after a large fire ruptured a gas main.

The blaze took hold of Tennyson House in Union Road, Ryde, with four engines responding to the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The cause is unknown, and no casualties have been reported. The road was sealed off during the operation, which lasted about five hours.

Chloe Boyce, of gas company, SGN, said several properties were affected.

She added: "This fire happened underneath a gas service pipe. The pipe melted and the meters were destroyed.

"We were called to isolate the gas supply and make that situation safe."
