A disused social club in Southampton has been destroyed by fire.

Hampshire firefighters and police were called to the blaze in the Warren Social Club in Warren Crescent, Shirley Warren just after 02:00 BST.

At the height of the fire, more than 30 firefighters were on scene, Hampshire Fire & Rescue said. The fire service said no-one was hurt in the fire.

The brick building closed on 8 March. It is not yet clear how the blaze began.

Resident Rob Wright said he and his wife were alerted to the fire by a "bonfire" smell and then a crashing noise, which he believes was the roof collapsing.

He said: "The road was taped off, and there was no roof and there were flames all inside and the firemen were hosing it down.

"It didn't seem to be going down at all."
