More than 800 people signed a petition to keep the Bitterne Walk-in Centre open

An NHS health centre in Southampton is to close despite opposition from residents.

The Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) agreed to back the closure of Bitterne Walk-in Centre, having previously said nurses would be best deployed in the community.

More than 800 residents had signed a petition to keep the centre open.

But the CCG said the centre, which opened in 2003, duplicated other services.

"Funding should be redirected to services that care for the growing number of people in the city with long term conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or dementia," it said.

It has pledged there will be no compulsory redundancies and Solent NHS Trust said it would look to redeploy staff.

Alex Whitfield, from the trust, said it supported the CCG's decision.

"We want to invest in services that are closer to people's homes across the whole of the city, and we believe that by closing the walk-in service and reallocating resources to community-based health services we can do this."
