Work is beginning to upgrade six level crossings in North East Lincolnshire.

Network Rail is spending £83m putting in obstacle detection barriers which scan the crossing using a laser to confirm it is clear.

Wellowgate crossing is the first to be upgraded and will be closed to traffic from 22:00 BST until 15 June.

Work on Friargate, Fish Dock Road, Pasture Street, Littlefield Lane and Garden Street will run throughout June to September.

Network Rail said road diversions would be in place throughout the work.

More upgrades to different parts of the network in North Lincolnshire are to be announced later in the year.

Mark Tarry, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "The investment in Grimsby will bring the crossings up to the most modern standard and will make the network... more reliable and efficient for both rail users and the communities nearby."
