A pop concert in Hull has been cancelled days before it was due to take place because of poor ticket sales, organisers have said.

Acts such as Union J, Labrinth, Ella Eyre, Sinitta and Aswad were due to headline West Park Party on Saturday.

Organiser Bill Blenkarn said he had lost £200,000 after only selling 1,000 tickets of the estimated 3,000 he needed for the event to go ahead.

But messages were left on social media stating the event "was too expensive".

Mr Blenkarn said: "We did the research before launching it and £30 for an [adult] ticket - if you look at any other festival across the country - with that type of line up it is below the UK average."

He said the event was attracting people from outside of Hull but "we didn't get the support for whatever reason, I just don't know what it is".

'Lot of money'

"I've lost £200,000, said Mr Blenkarn.

"I think what's more hurtful is seeing the messages on [social media]".

Phil Heys tweeted, external: "Why would you think 25,000 people will turn up to watch has beens and one hit wonders? No promotion or variety"

Claire Hughes ‏commented, external: "It was a lot of money for the line-up - rightly or wrongly, people in Hull are used to better quality for free"

But Helen Bammar Bell posted on Facebook: "We had family and friends booked to come from south west of England with this event being half the reason.

"I am feeling quite annoyed a week before the event when countdowns were being shared just yesterday. Am hoping now for an easy refund....not that it will cover the cost of disappointment"

Mr Blenkarn said people who had bought tickets would be "given a full refund".
