A man is in hospital with a serious head injury after he was attacked by two men in a Kent town centre.

Police said the 50-year-old man hit his head when he was punched and fell to the ground in Week Street, Maidstone, at 03:50 BST on Saturday.

A 25-year-old man, who was also assaulted and had a road sign thrown at him, suffered less serious facial and back injuries.

A man arrested in connection with the attacks has been freed without charge.

Det Insp Neil Kimber, of Kent Police, said: "The victims were walking in the direction of the High Street when these assaults occurred and we are making a number of enquiries to identify two males we believe were responsible."

The attackers are believed to be 17 or 18 and both were described as wearing dark clothing. One had a dark jumper with a white T-shirt underneath.
