Crackdown on Westcotes street wheelie bins

  • Published

Residents in Leicester are being warned they could be fined £110 if they leave wheelie bins on the street.

Around 4,000 properties in the Westcotes area are being sent letters warning bins cause an obstruction and can attract arson attacks.

The city council said wardens would raise issues informally at first but enforcement would follow if necessary.

Officials said residents had enough options to get rid of waste in a considerate and safe manner.

Wardens will speak to householders to clarify any problems they may have with removing their bin between collection days.

Councillor Sarah Russell said: "However where residents continually ignore our advice and help we can, and will, take enforcement action.

"The approach has already proved successful in other wards across the city, and has improved the safety and appearance of streets as a result."
