Debra Jenkins reversed into her mother Joan while in The Green in Syston
A woman who ran over and killed her mother while more than twice the drink-drive limit has been jailed.
Debra Jenkins, 57, reversed over Joan Donisthorpe, 86, as she went to pick her up from a hairdressers appointment in Syston, Leicestershire, in January.
Jenkins had 192mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.
She was jailed for three years and banned from driving for seven years at Leicester Crown Court by Judge Nicolas Dean QC.
He told her: "It's apparent that since the events of January 8, Debra Jenkins' life has been a form of purgatory.
"But, so too has the lives of others including James Donisthorpe, her devoted husband."
'Lonely' life
He added: "His statement and the predicament of the defendant show just how tragic this case is, but this type of case is often tragic both for the defendant and for family members," Judge Dean said.
"I don't suppose you will ever be reconciled with the guilt that you feel," he told her.
Reading from a statement by James Donisthorpe, prosecutor Tina Dempster said: "He misses her very much. When he drives, he sometimes pats the seat because she is no longer there.
"He misses her every second of every minute of every hour of every day. He describes his life now as lonely."
Jenkins, of Herrick Close, Sileby, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving at an earlier hearing.
In mitigation, Steven Newcombe said Mrs Jenkins had a long history of alcohol abuse and referred to the incident as "tragic".
He said: "Whatever the sentence, I hope your honour will accept nothing will take away the guilt she feels for what has happened and it's something she will have to learn to live with for some time."
