Merseyside Police said they wanted to speak to a group of people who stood next to the man while he was on the ground
A man is in a critical condition after an assault in St Helens.
Police were called to Church Road, Haydock, at about midnight to reports of a man lying unconscious in the street.
The 40-year-old man, from the local area, was taken by ambulance to the Walton Neurological Centre with a serious head injury.
Officers said they wanted to speak to a group of people who were standing next to the man while he was on the ground.
Det Ch Insp Lee Turner said: "A man is in a very poorly condition in hospital, so I am calling on the people who were there to do the right thing and come forward".
