A man has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting murdering his neighbour in Liverpool.

Martin Daiken, 28, of Boaler Street, Kensington, admitted the "brutal" and "sustained" attack on 47-year-old Roy Heyes five months ago.

At Liverpool Crown Court, he was given a life sentence with a 17-year tariff before he is eligible for parole.

Merseyside Police described Daiken as a "dangerous individual".

The force said Daiken had handed himself in to officers later in the evening of 1 March and was charged with murder.

He admitted manslaughter and later admitted murder at his trial.

Det Ch Insp Andy O'Connor said: "On behalf of Merseyside Police, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Roy Heyes."

"I know from my dealings with Roy's family that he is greatly missed by his family and friends.

"I hope that the sentencing today gives them some sense of closure, although I know that their sense of loss will stay with them."
