Friends of the teenager said they were devastated by his death
A body found in Northamptonshire's River Nene was that of a 15-year-old boy, police have confirmed.
Daniel James McCullagh from Woodford was reported missing in the Woodford Lock area of the river shortly before 15:00 BST on Tuesday.
His body was found some three hours later following a search of the area by emergency services.
BBC Look East's Stuart Radcliffe said it was believed teenagers had been jumping off a bridge into the river.
An investigation is under way and the death is not being treated as suicide, police said.
'Dropped down in tears'
Friends have since attended the scene to lay flowers and pay their respects.
Ryan Parr said: "He was my best mate. Basically a brother to me. It was a shame for his death to be like this."
Another friend Josh Coyle said: "I was devastated. I didn't believe it was true and then I asked a few people and found out who it was and just dropped down in tears.
"The locks is quite a point in the summer. We usually come down here, swim, have a good time, but I think that's going to stop now."
Police said a report had been prepared for the coroner.
