Two sinkholes have opened up behind the offices of the BBC in Northampton.

The first hole, measuring about 4ft (1.2m) deep and 2ft (0.6m) wide, opened on Lower Mounts on Saturday with a second hole opening up nearby.

Anglian Water said they were caused by a leaking underground pipe and workers have opened up part of the road surface in order to fix them.

Drivers in Lower Mounts, Wellingborough Road, York Road and Abington Street are likely to be delayed for two days.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: "With the amount of infrastructure we have underground it's often quite difficult to say what may have been the exact cause, but we are fairly confident with this one that water running from a leak has undermined the road surface causing the road to dip and the hole to be created.

"While having an impact it does mean the positive side is now the leak's repaired, and once we do fill the hole back in, there is a very minimal risk of something like this happening again in that area."
