A gasification plant is to go ahead in Northamptonshire after councillors approved changes to a scheme that already had planning permission.

The plant is to be built on the Willowbrook Industrial Estate in Corby.

Waste will be gasified to drive an electricity generator, but objectors are concerned about its environmental impact and delivery lorries.

The company, Clean Power, said the plant would provide "clean, renewable, energy" for 10,000 homes.

Waste to energy plants have attracted protests in Corby where residents fear becoming a 'dumping ground'

It would use waste that would otherwise go to landfill to "generate renewable energy".

Rob McKeller, leader of the Conservative opposition in Corby Borough Council, was a leader of the protest against the plant.

He said: "This is obviously a huge blow for local people.

"With each waste plant application that is approved, Corby runs an ever greater risk of becoming the nation's dumping ground.

"The campaign will go on and will gather pace as ever, and we will continue to oppose each and every unwanted waste plant application that comes forward for Corby and its surrounding villages."
