Lorries are being routed through Cotswold villages such as Burford

Some Oxfordshire residents say lorries should be forced to use commercial sat-navs to protect its picturesque villages and towns from traffic.

A Burford councillor says the HGVs are "shaking the foundations" of listed buildings, and disturbing hotel guests.

The county council voted at its last full council meeting to write to central government asking for stricter rules for HGV drivers.

The Freight Transport Association says the proposal is "unworkable".

Spokesman James Firth said: "This seems to be a proposal which is unworkable, unenforceable and carries a significant cost to industry."

When asked for a response, the government said Oxfordshire County Council already had the power to solve this issue by imposing restrictions on the road.

However, Councillor David Nimmo Smith said the council only wanted to reduce the number of HGVs, and did not want to ban vehicles with "legitimate business" in the area.
