A fire that gutted a disused hotel is being investigated by police.

West Mercia Police want to hear from anyone who saw "any suspicious activity" near the derelict Mill Hotel in Alveley on Monday.

The blaze started about 05:00 BST and is thought to have caused millions of pounds of damage, police said.

No-one is believed to have been hurt, but searches at the site are continuing. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

About 20 firefighters remain at the hotel and are "dampening down and checking for hot spots", a fire service spokeswoman said.

Parts of the building have collapsed and the roof has been reduced to a few charred beams.

A structural engineer has attended the site to assess the building.

A police spokeswoman said officers are "eager to establish the circumstances" of the fire and are urging anyone who knows somebody who frequents the building to contact them.

'Carefully restored'

The four-star Mill Hotel, a popular wedding venue, closed unexpectedly last September as a result of the financial problems of its owner, Elysian Care.

The building dated back to the 16th Century and was once a flour mill, according to Visit Heart of England.

The 41-bedroom hotel had been "carefully restored and extended" with many of the original features maintained, the tourist information website said.
