A man in his 80s was driven to a bank to withdraw £700 in a scam by a bogus builder in Frome, Somerset.
A police spokesman said on 17 January the victim received an unsolicited visit from a man who said he could repair his car port.
They agreed a price and the elderly man was driven to the bank to withdraw the money as a deposit.
The offender took it and said he was going to pick up some materials. He never returned.
The police spokesman said when the victim tried to contact the builder neither the phone number nor the address were valid.
Det Con Angus Roberts said: "This was a callous crime and I would urge the person responsible to come forward and face up to their action."
