Dozens of firefighters were sent to the scene of a blaze at a waste recycling unit in Sheffield in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Crews were sent to the industrial unit on the Yarra Estate off Station Road in the Ecclesfield area of the city.
At the height of the fire seven fire engines with about 35 crew were at the scene.
As crews tackled the blaze there was the sound of an explosion and fire fighters were moved back.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said residents should be assured the explosions were "expected".
An investigation has begun into the cause of the blaze.
