The mother of a 17-year-old boy who died after his heart stopped suddenly has held a free cardiac screening event for 100 young people.

Elaine Ward's son, Neil, died in 1992 while at a scout meeting in Dronfield.

Since 2009, she has raised thousands of pounds to stage a number of events, including the event at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, on Thursday.

Mrs Ward said: "Screening does find people with life-threatening conditions and they can then be helped."

The event at Bramall Lane was organised in association with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Mrs Ward raised £3,500 to fund the screening.

In the UK, 12 people aged between 14 and 35 die every week of undiagnosed heart conditions, according to the charity.

Cardiologist Alexandros Steriotis said: "I've seen families that have lost their children and we're trying to decrease the risk of sudden cardiac death."
