A woman who was attacked by a man who smashed her car window has said she is "devastated and bewildered" that he has not been jailed.

Chloe Knapton, from Holmfirth, had to have surgery after Andrew Shires shattered her car window with a bottle.

The 21-year-old had stopped her car when she had an argument with Shires over a bike he had left in the road.

He was given a 12-month suspended jail sentence for wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Leeds Crown Court was told Shires, 37, of Church Street, Huddersfield, who had previously admitted the charge, had been drinking on the night of the attack in April.

He said he overreacted and it was a "reckless mistake".

Miss Knapton said her ambition to be a professional dancer had been ruined as a result of the attack.

"I'm afraid of things I've never been afraid of," she said.

"It's the long-term scarring for me emotionally as well as on the outside."

Her mother Alison Knapton added: "She's had two nights out and each time she's ended up in tears because she's scared of being around people."
