One witness told the Norwich Crown Court jury the defendant's driving was "disgusting"

An off-duty police officer knocked a cyclist off his bike and then pushed him against a shop window, a court has heard.

PC William Ormsby, 54, of Ipswich, denies dangerous driving and assault in Ipswich in February last year.

Norwich Crown Court heard Ben Fosdike felt "intimidated" by Mr Ormsby, who he claimed was driving too close to him.

Mr Ormsby overtook and came to a stop on the pavement, causing the cyclist to fall off his bike, the court heard.

Police statements taken at the scene, on Norwich Road, were read out and the court heard Mr Ormsby believed Mr Fosdike was "all over the road" and in his path.

He said he heard a thud and accelerated instead of braking in the automatic car, which he was not used to.

'Disgusting' driving

He pulled on to the pavement, got out and there was "pushing and shoving" with Mr Fosdike.

The jury heard Mr Fosdike admitted hitting the Nissan Micra's wing mirror as it passed him.

Mr Ormsby said in his statement he was shaken up and the cyclist had been riding ahead of him.

As he passed the cyclist, Mr Ormsby said Mr Fosdike broke his wing mirror with his fist, so he pulled over, however the jury heard the wing mirror was not broken.

Sheena Bradford, a witness in court, said: "He [Mr Ormsby] looked extremely cross and I thought it was the beginning of a fight."

Another witness, Amy O'Connor, said Mr Ormsby's driving was "disgusting" and his car mounted the pavement just in front of the buggy she was pushing.

"If I was a few seconds quicker then it could've got my daughter," she said.

The trial continues.
