Fines of £70 will be issued to drivers illegally parking near primary schools
Motorists who park on pavements around primary schools could receive on-the-spot fines of £70 this week as part of a safety campaign in Brighton and Hove.
Council officials and police officers are targeting drivers who park illegally around four schools, endangering the lives of children.
Offences include parking on double yellow lines and on verges.
Martin Heath, head of road safety at Brighton and Hove City Council, said illegal parking had increased.
Councillor Peter West, who chairs the environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: "A lot of parents are very concerned about the impact of parking too close to the school, causing an obstruction, and creating danger for their children."
The schools where illegal parking is being monitored are Rudyard Kipling primary school, in Woodingdean; Westdene primary school, in Brighton; and Aldrington Church of England primary school and Hangleton infant and junior schools, both in Hove.
