Several hundred thousand people visit the street each year, the council said
One of Brighton's busiest shopping streets has been closed to traffic at weekends for a trial period.
"Historic" East Street is one of Brighton's most well-used thoroughfares, leading from the Royal Pavilion to the seafront.
It will be closed to vehicles from 11:00 BST to 19:00 BST on Saturdays and Sundays, for up to 18 months.
Brighton & Hove City Council said the move followed "extensive consultation" and campaigning from traders.
