Firefighters are carrying out a "controlled burn" after a major fire at a college site in East Sussex.

Officers were called to the scene of the blaze in a barn belonging to Plumpton College in Ditchling Road at about 07:30 BST on Thursday.

The college specialises in land-based courses such as horticulture and agriculture.

It is now thought about 3,000 bales of hay caught fire. There are no reports of injuries or animals being involved.

At 10:30 BST on Thursday, East Sussex Fire and Rescue said a crew from Uckfield was at the scene carrying out a controlled burn.

A mechanical digger is being used to reduce the pile of hay and manage the incident.

The fire service has warned this may cause an increase of smoke in the area.

Firefighters have also been working to make the building safer by removing roof panels which were damaged in the fire.

It is likely that the operation will continue for the remainder of Friday.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
