A pensioner has been charged with sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl while she was sitting in a shopping trolley in West Sussex.
Officers were called to Asda in Crawley at noon on Sunday to reports a man was acting suspiciously around the child.
Hugh Unwin, 75, of Garden Walk, Crawley, is alleged to have assaulted the girl as her mother turned away.
He appeared in court on Monday and was remanded in custody until 25 September.
Det Insp Alan Pack said: "I understand that this will be worrying for all parents, but it is a rare incident and reinforces that vigilance pays off."
Anyone in the store who saw anything suspicious around the time or might have information that could be relevant is urged to contact Sussex Police.
